Water is an
essential component in our daily life because we have to use it for various
purposes. While using water, you will have to come across with droplets of the
water. Now, my question is that ‘Have you ever considered how many numbers of atoms and molecules in a droplet of water?’. If
you have ever considered it, you should tell me the first answer that comes to
your mind in the comments box. Now, we try to get the possible answer to this
question. In order to get a possible answer to this question, we have to do a simple
chemistry calculation. Before doing this calculation, it is also necessary for
us to get an idea about the droplet of the water because different people have
different droplets of water. According to the medical and scientific community,
the average volume of a droplet of water is almost 0.05mL.
The chemical formula of water
After
getting an idea about the average volume of a droplet of water, we have to get
an idea about the chemical formula of the water. As we know that H2O is the
chemical formula of water. If we take an overview of the chemical formula of
the water, we come to know that there are two Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen
atom in each water molecule. Therefore, the total numbers of atoms in a water
molecule are three.
The molar mass of water
To calculate
the number of atoms in one droplet of water, it is also necessary for us to get
an idea about the molar mass of the water. We can easily find out the molar
mass of water by following these simple steps;
· First
of all, we should know the mass of one Hydrogen atom from the periodic table. The
mass of one Hydrogen atom is 1.008g/Mol.
· In
a similar way, we should know the mass of one oxygen atom from the periodic
table. The mass of one Oxygen atom is 16.0g/Mol.
· Now,
we have to calculate the total mass of one molecule of water. To calculate the total
mass of one molecule of water, we have to do the following calculation;
Mass of Oxygen + 2(Mass of Hydrogen)
· After
doing this calculation, we get a new value which tells us about the total mass
of water and that is 18.016 g/Mol.

Density of water
Along with
getting an idea about the chemical formula of water and molar mass of water, it
is also necessary for us to know about the density of water. The density of
water means that we should know the mass per unit volume of the water. The
density of the water also varies because the density of cold water is more than
the density of the warm water. Anyhow, the density of the water that we use in
different calculations is 1g/mL. It means that if you have one millilitre of
water, the mass of that water will be one gram. As we know that molar mass of
one droplet of water is 0.05g/mL, it means that the mass of one droplet of the
water is equal to 0.05 grams. Now, it is easy for us to get an idea about total
numbers of moles in one droplet of water by using the following calculation;
0.05 X
1/18.016 = 0.002775
Use Avogadro’s number
After
knowing about these things, we are reached at the final stage of calculating
the total number of molecules in one droplet of water. According to Avogadro’s
number, if we have one mole of water, the total number of molecules will be 6.022
x 10^23. In the case of one droplet of water, we have 0.002775 moles of water. Therefore,
if we multiply 6.022 x 10^23 with 0.002775, we get the answer 1.67 X 10^21. It
means that there are 1.67 X 10^21 molecules in one droplet of water. In other
words, we can also say that there are 1.67 sextillion water molecules in one
droplet of water. As we know that there are three atoms in the water molecule.
Therefore, we can easily find out the total number of atoms in a droplet of
water by multiplying 1.67 X 10^21 with 3. After multiplication, we get the
answer 5.01 X 10^21. It means that there are 5.01 X 10^21 atoms in one droplet
of water. Therefore, we can also say that there are 5 sextillion atoms in
one droplet of water.
